The club’s whole purpose is to teach wakeboarding and give people the opportunity to wakeboard on a regular basis (while its still warm). It doesn’t matter what skill level you are, if you are interested in wakeboarding, then the club is right for you.
If you want to join the club, there are only four things that you have to do.
- Pay dues (dues are to be payed once a YEAR) $50
- Take a swim test. We will set up a few swim tests at the beginning of the year for members to take. If you miss these swim tests you can set up your own. The swim test is basically treading water and doing laps. The tests can be taken Monday-Thursday from 8pm to 10pm
- Sign Waivers.
- Show proof of Medical Insurance and Student ID.
Thats it. After you’ve done these four things you’ll be given the opportunity to sign up for club days.
Club days are going to be every other Saturday and/or Sunday (depending on how much interest we have) and maybe even sometimes during the week. You will sign up for a time slot to go wakeboarding behind one of a few boats we have at our disposal. Time slots will be every two hours and will have a capacity of four riders per slot. Each rider is expected to bring $15 for gas for each set (Gas isn’t cheap and wake boats are gas guzzlers). A set is 30 minutes of riding and it is more than enough if you are not an experienced rider. Your dues as a club member DO NOT contribute to the gas money you pay to ride. The dues go to a boat maintenance fund and help us get through the year contributing to t-shirts, regionals, and nationals.
A few riders will, most likely, want to wakeboard more than twice every other week. I will do my best to get out as much as possible but things are subject to change if we get a boat donated to the club. If this happens then YOU can take the boat out yourself. I am working hard at this, but I also need help!
We will have meetings on campus that will be once a month. Most of the information you need to know will be constantly posted on this website and if you need additional information at any time you can email an officer.
During the School year, there are two contests the club will definately attend, with room for a few other events if the club’s fundraising goes well. The first contest is Regional Qualifiers and is typically in September. The second is Collegiate Nationals and that is typically in May.
Regional Qualifiers has several divisions. Beginner, Women, Wakeskate, Intermediate, Outlaw, and Pro. If you are a full member of the club, you can attend this contest. Keep up with emails and meetings for more details.
Collegiate Nationals is a head to head formate. Only the top FIVE male wakeboarders, TWO top wakeskater, and top TWO female wakeboarders will be allowed to go. UNCW placed 6th out of 16 in April of 2010 at the Collegiate Championships in Austin, TX.
If you have any more questions please feel free to ask any of the officers. Also if you have any suggestions that could improve our club please feel free to email us and let us know.
Thanks.
I was interested in joining the wakeboarding club. However, due to illness I did not get to sign up for the email list or a swim test at the involvement carnival.
